Janet has 200 acres of grass at her disposal to concentrate on the development of her beloved pedigree Limousin herd, an enterprise that first began in 1996.
She currently has three stock bulls, acquired from two of Yorkshire’s leading Limousin breeders, the renowned Oddacres herd of John and Claire Mason, based at Embsay, near Skipton, and the Tomschoice herd of James and Sarah Cooper, at Dacre, Harrogate,
With her suckler herd, Janet aims to produce 60 Spring-calving cows, made up of 30 pure-bred Limousins and 30 Limousin-cross.
Apart from those held as replacements, they are sold at 16-19 months in September and October – some to pedigree breeders, some as conditioning stores.
Janet also buys in around 120 store cattle in October and November, which are brought on prior to sale at Skipton Auction Mart the following Autumn.
All Janet’s cattle are reared completely naturally, being grass-fed in the summer months and finished on special high-energy diets comprising 70/30 Massey Beef Nuts and home-grown barley.
She explained: “Breeding lines are very important and I am always trying to improve my suckler herd performance. I am in the top 10% now and want to get even better. It’s all about maximising results – and producing the best quality cattle and returns for my growing band of buyers.
“I also place a great deal of emphasis on animal welfare standards and in meeting my environmental obligations. This, too, is extremely important.”
